The periodic table is not a finished poster. It is a chapter in an unfinished attempt to understand existence — with gaps that once shone before they were found, and an edge beyond which the unnamed begins.

Four aethers — kept cleanly apart
The four elements
Earth, water, air and fire — for Empedocles the four roots of all things, and found independently in China, India and Greece. As chemistry they are superseded: not one of them is an element in the sense of the table. As a description of what a person perceives in a place — ground, river, wind, warmth — they have never been refuted, because they were never a claim about matter. They stand in the band beneath this page: the Alpine chain, the Aare, the two birds, the light in the lettering.
The quintessence
The fifth element of antiquity: the imperishable substance of the celestial spheres in Aristotle. An interpretation of the world — not a measurement.
The luminiferous aether — refuted
Classical physics needed a carrier medium for light. In 1887 Michelson and Morley searched for the aether wind — and found none. The theory of relativity managed without it. That science could let go of a beautiful idea is itself the lesson.
Quantum fields and vacuum
The modern “emptiness” is not nothing: fields pervade space, and even the vacuum fluctuates. A factual parallel to the old aether — not proof that it existed after all.

The invisible through which attention moves: attentiveness, presence, the space between two people.

Established A quantum system can hold states in superposition until a measurement forces an answer.

Observation
Established Measurement is interaction; at the smallest scale there is no such thing as uninvolved watching.

Uncertainty
Established Position and momentum cannot both be arbitrarily sharp at once — a property of nature, not a measurement error.
Humility: even with the best intentions, no one knows another person completely.
Resonance and emergence
Established From simple rules and many parts, something new arises that no part contains on its own.
A circle of people who carry one another is more than the list of its members.
Vacuum fluctuations
Established Even “empty” space carries measurable restlessness, as in the Casimir effect.
Even in the silence of a waiting room, something is there.

Hypothesis Island of stability: around atomic numbers 114 to 126 with roughly 184 neutrons, models predict longer-lived superheavy nuclei. Those created so far decay in milliseconds — the island is a map, not yet land.
Hypothesis The two sought — elements 119 and 120: predicted by the order of the periodic table and searched for experimentally worldwide, so far not detected. As of August 2026: for 119, RIKEN is bombarding curium with vanadium, without a recognised detection; in Berkeley, in preparation for 120, a titanium-50 beam produced two atoms of the known element 116 — evidence for the method, not for the element. “Uue” and “Ubn” are systematic placeholder names, not discovery names. An element counts as discovered only after review by the joint working group of IUPAC and IUPAP.

Beyond the table
Antimatter
For every particle a mirror particle; positrons work daily in PET diagnostics. Why the world consists of matter remains open.
Plasma
The most common visible state of matter in the universe — every sun, every aurora.
Exotic atoms
Positronium, muonic hydrogen: atoms made of unfamiliar building blocks, short-lived and measurable.
Neutron star matter
A teaspoon weighs billions of tonnes — matter without elements, beyond any table.
Dark matter
Its gravity has been observed many times over; its nature is unknown. It is not a missing chemical element — what is missing is not a row of the table but, most likely, an entirely different kind of particle.
Colour: Newton and Goethe
Newton split white light in the prism and was right: colour is wavelength, measurable, physical. Goethe contradicted him all his life and was wrong as a physicist — but he described something else, namely how colour is **experienced**: as a relation between light and dark, never as a property in itself. Both sentences are true, because they answer different questions. This website works by the second: every colour value is measured against the ground it stands on — by day against cream, by night against deep blue. The same gold carries on one ground and disappears on the other.

What this has to do with care
Established Every atom of your body except the hydrogen was bred in stars or forged in their explosions. That is not poetry — that is nucleosynthesis.
The table shows what humanity can name so far. The gaps always showed both: not knowing — and the precision with which good not-knowing already knows the shape of what is to come. Care begins in the same place: where knowledge meets humility and the known stays open to the unknown. The space between the elements — the relationship — appears on no table and yet carries everything living.
